The Royal Institute of British Architects announced the winner of its 2012 Stirling Prize for architecture: the Sainsbury Laboratory, by the London-based firm Stanton Williams. The building, a highly sustainable and adaptable design for the University of Cambridge, beat out five other designs to be named the best new building in the U.K. It was tempting to describe the Stanton Williams project as a dark horse, compared with the London 2012 Olympic Stadium by Populous.
