The Latin American Metropolis

"The Metropolis in Latin America, 1830-1930," opening Sept. 16 at Los Angeles' Getty Research Institute, chronicles the development of six capital cities south of the border: Buenos Aires, Argentina; Havana; Lima, Peru; Mexico City; Rio de Janeiro; and Santiago, Chile. Through maps, photographs, plans, and prints, the show examines how the colonial city, originally shaped by Spanish and Portuguese regulations, developed during the republican era in response to industrialization, indigenous revivals, and other pressures. Objects on view include Francisco Mujica's History of the Skyscraper (1929, above).
