On the trail of Mies In 2015 the Land of Berlin set up an ideas competition for experimental housing, the aim being to stimulate new concepts for economical housing and urban density in the all too sluggish housing sector. The spectrum of projects submitted by teams made up architects and developers ranged from the conversion of old precast panel building complexes to extensions and to plans for unused landbanks. Nine projects were selected to be realised, the first to be completed consists of the two corner buildings Norderoog and Siideroog in Wedding, a working class Berlin district - incidentally not from the only social housing project in Berlin by Mies van der Rohe, which was erected in 1927 on Afrikanische Strasse, and suffered from the restrictions of the tight communal housing budget. His apartments turned out to be far too expensive and criticism in the press, at times harsh, led Mies to make the statement: "then give the workers more money."
