摘要

An act of authentication using the sense of touch can be immediately triggered by a visual encounter with an object. When a small child finds a ball in front of her, she reaches out and grabs it as part of a continuous movement. This chain of actions does not cease as the child lifts the ball to her mouth and verifies its texture with her front teeth. While this series of behaviors is a perfectly ordinary, daily occurrence, an event of this type clearly defines our abiding trust in the sense of touch. Touch can be seen as a signal or feeling that is received by every part of our bodies, including our eyes. Digital culture, which for the sake of convenience has come to be such a big part of our lives, merely conveys the shadows of a virtual or non-existent, other world visually by means of a monitor. The binary signal sent from a mouse button to the computer is the sole communication. The only thing that our fingertips actually touch is the mouse button. We long to live in a real world that we can grab with both hands, shine a light on, and create shadows.
