The first built work of Loos was the interior of Tailor shop Ebenstein (1897), followed by the interiors of Herrenmodesalon Goldman and Salatsch in 1898 and Cafe Museum (See pp. 52-55) in 1899. With these initial projects, he realized many other interior design works. It could be said that he maintained a common design principle to his interior and architecture work, considering that Loos separated the interior space from the external environment in his design of detached urban houses. To him, no significant difference seems to exist between those worlds desired for house designs and those for interior plans. Cafe Museum brings the atmosphere of a city into the interior space, where the emptiness of a city and the contrasting coziness of the seats coexisted. Art critic Ludwig Hevesi in those days called it "Cafe Nihilism , Hevesi perhaps criticized the nihilistic situation, where Loos's own claim could be denied by the anonymous and featureless exterior element that coexisted with the contrasting idea of pursuing coziness for the room interior. The coziness of a private house was pursued in Knize Gentleman's Fitting Shop (See pp. 66-73), although it was a store. It can be regarded as a graceful interior work, being consistent with a series of his interior works for houses. The finishes were amazingly diversified. Considering the wood materials, various types of solid wood and plywood were used including oak, mahogany, maple, lemon, and cherry. Softwood was used for coatings, and was mainly painted white. The most frequently used marble was Cipollino marble from Greece. Loos's extraordinary dedication for finding materials can be partially glimpsed from the fact that he traveled to Greece in search of various types of precious and rare marble. Spaces imagined by Loos came to possess an individual strength as a completed room, driven by the power of the materials. When the spaces were arranged along an axis line, a series of stories was born. Characteristics commonly found in all of the interior works of Loos are shown below.
