Critique: Finding a dramatic home for a political football

After years of promoting a West Side stadium for football and the Olympics, the Bloomberg administration—stung by the defeat of its plan in Albany—quickly regrouped and proposed to build in Flushing Meadows, Queens, piggybacking an Olympic facility on a new Shea Stadium for the Mets. The new site is vastly superior in practically every way: public transportation connections, automobile access, and adjacency to other sporting venues. And, unlike the West Side location, which would have required construction at public expense of a huge platform over an active rail yard, the Queens site is largely parking lots.
