This plans is expansion of the campus classroom building Rikkyo University. The central courtyard formed between the two buildings becomes an extension of the existing courtyard, drawing in a steady flow of students. In an effort to have the facade screen direct sunlight to reduce the building's thermal environmental load while maintaining daylight and views, the profile of the beams and columns of the structural frame take a trapezoidal form designed specifically to consider these factors. Through inverting the beams, full-height, bright classroom spaces are achieved. Thus, a rational facade structure was created that works to reduce internal environmental loads and creates a changing external scenery depending on the season, time of day or angle from which it is observed.
