On Dec. 7, London Mayor Sadiq Khan announced the winner of the Illuminated River International Design Competition—"Current," by light artist Leo Villareal and architects and urban planners Lifschutz Davidson Sandilands, who led a winning team that includes 12 additional consulting firms. The announcement ended a six-month process that invited proposals for light art installations on all of London's 17 central bridges along the Thames. In all, the competition received entries from 105 teams from around the world to the initial call for participation. From those 105, six were selected for the shortlist, and those projects were exhibited to the London public in November. According to the winning team's statement, "Current" aims to "integrate light and color ... creating a sensitive, interactive and site-specific interplay with the river."
