This is in every sense a heavyweight book - from someone who tried reading it in bed - but one where immersive reading is genuinely rewarding. A little knowledge of Anglicanism, or more particularly the history of the established Church of England, is necessary, as the acronyms of various church groupings and associations come thick and fast. A prior reconnoitre through some of the players from the Tractarians and Puseyites to the Oxford, Cambridge and Camden movements is beneficial.
