This is the story of those individuals who never made it into Boswell's Edinburgh diaries or Carlyle's autobiography. The city's builders and artisans kept few diaries, rarely sat for portraits, and their private letters are scarce. Some became wealthy, others mired in bankruptcy - ironically, there is more documentation about their travails and misfortunes than their successes. Bankruptcy proceedings and legal disputes tend to be well recorded and Anthony Lewis has made good use of them.
