摘要

Several weeks ago I visited two of Frank Gehry's greatest works for the first time. I started near the coast of northern Spain at the Guggenheim Bilbao, a museum whose swooping, knotlike form, clad in gleaming panels of gunmetal-gray titanium, seemed at one with the day's stormy skies and the roiling river that flows nearby. The 1997 building is sculptural and dramatic; in fact, it was far more powerful than most of the artworks on display inside. The next morning I was in Paris's Bois de Boulogne park touring Gehry's latest triumph, the Fondation Louis Vuitton, which opens in late October. Our cover story for this month's Innovation issue, the Fondation was also designed for art exhibitions, but at that moment its vast, still-empty spaces were astonishingly beautiful.
