With increasing frequency, brownfield developments are being viewed as an antidote to declining urban economies and suburban sprawl. A new project in the heart of Toronto, the most ambitious historic industrial renovation in its history, is poised to test this concept. To pass through the chain-link security fence of the Gooderham and Worts Distillery is to be transported back in time to a Dickensian world of narrow cobblestone streets and grimy Victorian brick buildings replete with the still-odorous relics of a long-forgotten era.
