David Dewar defines how the balance of values, knowledge and skills missing from the architectural education profession may be readdressed. Architecture as a profession is consistently declining in status internationally. The reasons for this rest almost entirely with the discipline itself. Four reasons, in particular, underpin this trend. The first is that architecture has increasingly become the handmaiden of the rich and, particularly, the large property developer, as opposed to society at large. It is the values of greed that most commonly inform outcomes, and the relevance of the profession to society is increasingly questioned.
