On a wide stretch of the once-tawdry Bowery, this glamorous new hotel has opened just south of the quaint 1859 brownstone edifice that houses the Cooper Union, an influential art, architecture and engineering school that has long been a training ground of the architectural avant-garde. John Hejduk, who served as dean for decades, created some of the city's most spectacular white modern interiors in the historic structure where Abraham Lincoln once spoke. Now Anthony Vidler is the dean, and an almost-completed angular new Cooper Union Administration Building by Thorn Mayne of Morphosis is going up next to the new hotel.
