Investigating Culture Through The Senses

After three years of development, Herculaneum (Naples) is now home to the MAV, the world's first virtual archaeology museum, built at a cost of €10 million. A former school building was transformed into a highly original 1,500-square-metre (16,146-square-foot) space, with 70 interactive installations that recount life in the Roman cities of Pompei, Herculaneum and Stabia prior to the eruption of Mount Vesuvius in ad 79. The project was designed by Gaetano Capasso, an electronics engineer and expert in virtual reality in the field of cultural heritage. Capasso, one of the members of the virtual reality production company Capware, was assisted by Valter Ferrara, the Director of Cultural Policies for the Naples Provincial Government, now director of the MAV.
