With the development of protocells, chemistry provides a new future for architecture. Through the creation of bottom-up cellular systems, a wholly new material science is promised that is both artificial and responsive. The cellular is brought before our eyes by the research of the Cronin Group and Martin Hanczyc at the University of Southern Denmark. Fully realised, Philip Beesley's Hylozoic Ground installation is a textile matrix that is responsive to its environment and to human touch.
