The ideological transitions in Eastern Europe, after the fall of the Berlin Wall in 1989, had a dramatic impact on cities. This period of unleashing democracy has now lasted more than two decades, often resulting in new and unexpected spatial and organisational effects. The territory known as the Western Balkans, the former Yugoslavia together with Albania located in Southeast Europe, experienced a particular twist towards emerging democracy after socialism was exhausted and after the wall came down.
