DIFFERENTIATION IN VITAL PRACTICE

For 25 years, working from RMIT in Melbourne, I have engaged with innovative architectural practices, developing an understanding of how their differentiation is supported by being in a community of practice in which three substantively different - tripolar - approaches to architecture are being pursued.1 This research into design practice is conducted through RMIT's design practice research PhD programme, a programme that invites practitioners with a peer-recognised body of work to engage in reflections on the nature of the mastery that they have established, its trajectories and the social structures that sustain it; and then to speculate on possible futures for practice arising from a deeper understanding of its processes.
