INTRODUCTION

The role of (), in general, includes offering an index of innovation - cumulatively gathering a history of the new and mapping tectonic movements of the architectural landscape. For this issue we have undertaken the task of focusing on architectural innovation directly. Such a project presents a very immediate problem: so ubiquitous has 'innovation' become as a word that its meaning has been blurred by its very omnipresence or 'everywhere-ness'. Approaching the topic is like stepping into a space of infinite echo and struggling to locate or pin down the source - the sound of'innovation' rebounding all around us, but without clear meaning. Perhaps the innovation imperative has become 'a kind of Warholian dream, [where] every echo has become an original artwork', as Mark Wigley once put it.
