The Scarcity and Creativity Studio (SCL) at the Oslo School of Architecture and Design (AHO) emerged out of a specific convergence of aspirations, convictions and opportunities. Founded in 2012, the studio pursues the goal of realising works in a climate of experimentation so as to enable students to learn from integrated design, research and hands-on building activities.This is based on the understanding that studios in most schools of architecture are omitting crucial aspects of the architectural process, and in so doing reinforce the chasm between education, research and practice. SCL's first conviction is that architecture realises itself in buildings. One can 'think' architecture, 'speculate' architecture, 'research' architecture, 'represent' architecture and 'simulate' architecture - and all of these contribute to the studio's understanding.Yet, the full experience of architecture is only realisable in buildings and their inhabitation.The second conviction is that the resistance that materials place between architectural intentions and the capacity to realise them can only be fully comprehended in the building process.Third, architecture is made through the participation of a network of actors - clients, engineers, consultants, authorities, builders, suppliers, researchers - which is a vital reality of the architectural process. Fourth, risk-taking experimentation and research are the principal means to new knowledge, which advances architecture.
