There is much that still needs to be researched about the neurobiology of human memory. An architectural and sculptural subset of humanity's need to remember is memorials. We pepper our buildings, towns and landscapes with them.They can take the form of extravagant aedicules, triumphal arches, giant columns, plaques, tombstones, sarcophagi, temples, mausoleums as well as figurative sculptures or a mixture of all - memorialising events, wars, catastrophes and lives led. Much of the great architecture and art of human civilisation has been predicated on some aspect of memorialisation.
