From Theory to Praxis: Digital Tools and the New Architectural Authorship

As Mario Carpo has argued, a relationship between architecture and its authorship that held sway from Alberti through to the rise of Modernism has been subverted in the digital era. The variability inherent in digital design undermines an authorship that rests on conceptions of identity - of an architect's design and its built realisation, for example.This same variability, however, invites new perspectives on hand-crafted and culture-specific building traditions that have long been associated with the premodern. Many recent experimental parametric construction projects, especially in the Eastern world, demonstrate how culturally specific approaches to tectonics, materiality and the built environment can continue to play a critical role in architectural expression.
