Another police station by Kerstin Thompson Architects has been completed in Carrum Downs. A 24-hour facility, it is set within native trees and is generally low-slung, with similar heights to the freestanding houses it is amongst, with the exception of a glazed-yellow brick 'tower' that heralds its entry road. A modest building that rewards closer inspection, the station is divided into separate squads with shared facilities. Externally this is achieved through the use of varied brickwork and their treatment-from an area of glazed bricks to grey bricks to 'hit and miss' screen walls enclosing the inner courtyards. Subtle inflections of the outer walls differentiate adjacent volumes and direct the eye to significant moments - the entry or the opening that emerges between a wall and its extension as a screen.
