Manual electric-arc welding using cellulose electrodes in the vertically down position has, over a period of decades, become established and proven practice in the construction of buried pipelines. Mechanized metal/active-gas (MAG) welding processes for pipeline construction have been developed and put into use as construction periods have become progressively shorter, skilled staff increasingly scarcer, and weld-quality requirements simultaneously greater. A combined MAG welding process with a solid wire in the vertically down position for the root pass and a rutile filler wire in the vertically up position for the filler and top passes was used in the construction of the E.ON Ruhrgas (ER) Rothenstadt to Schwandorf high-pressure pipeline in 2007.%Im erdverlegten Rohrleitungsbau hat sich das Elektrodenhandschweißen mit Zelluloseelektroden in der Fallnahtposition über Jahrzehnte etabliert und bewährt. Im Zuge immer kürzerer Bauzeiten und parallel einhergehender Personalknappheit bei gleichzeitig erhöhten Anforderungen an die Schweißnahtqualität wurden mechanisierte Metall-Aktiv-Gas-(MAG-) Schweißverfahren für den Pipelinebau entwickelt und eingesetzt. Beim Bau der E.ON Ruhrgas (ER) Hochdruckleitung Rothenstadt - Schwandorf in 2007 kam ein kombiniertes MAG-Schweißverfahren mit einem Massivdraht in der Fallnahtposition für die Wurzel und einem rutilen Fülldraht in der steigenden Position für die Füll- und Decklagen zum Einsatz.
