The study on corrosion resistance of superhydrophobic coatings on magnesium

A superhydrophobic coating was electrodeposited on the layered double hydroxides (LDHs) film pretreated on magnesium substrate. Comprehensive characterizations of this coating were performed in terms of morphology, composition, structure and wettability by scanning electronic microscope (SEM), the X-ray diffraction (XRD), Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR), and contact angle (CA). The water contact angle of as-prepared surfaces can reach as high as 154.3 degrees +/- 3.1 degrees with small rolling angle of 5.6 degrees +/- 0.8 degrees. The corrosion behavior of the coated samples in simulated body fluid (SBF) at 37 degrees C was also investigated by electrochemical measurement and immersion test. The results indicated that the superhydrophobic coating significantly slowed down the degradation rate of pure magnesium.
