The effect of eugenol (Eug) and its derivative acetyleugenol (AcEug) extracted from the nail of giroflier on the corrosion of steel in molar hydrochloric acid has been studied using weight loss measurements, electrochemical polarisation and EIS methods. The naturally substances reduce the corrosion rate. The inhibition efficiency was found to increase with acetyleugenol content to attain 91% at 0. 1737 g/l. Eugenol compounds act as mixed type inhibitors. The effect of temperature on the corrosion behaviour of steel indicates that inhibition efficiency of the natural substance increases with the rise of temperature. The adsorption of natural product on the steel is found to follow the Langmuir adsorption isotherm. (c) 2004 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.
