In the field of fuel cells, oxygen plays a key role as the final electron acceptor. To facilitate its reduction (Oxygen Reduction Reaction-ORR), a proper catalyst is needed and platinum is considered the best one due to its low overpotential for this reaction. By considering the high price of platinum, alternative catalysts are needed and manganese oxides (MnxOy) can be considered promising substitutes.
