This Applied Optics feature issue-to appear in the Optical Technology and Information Processing divisions-will highlight the illustrious research career of Professor Emmett Leith of the University of Michigan, who passed away suddenly in December 2005 at the age of 78, through a sampling of current research topics in applied optics that he pioneered. Leith published over 200 articles covering more than 50 years of research in radar and optics and was instrumental in the development of many disciplines that remain at the forefront of advanced research.
