Technology often develops faster than the marketplace can respond, requiring its developers to anticipate consumer desires. Consumers must be shown what services and capabilities can be achieved (and at what price) before they decide which ones will receive a popular mandate. History has already provided this lesson. U.S. railroads, electrical utilities, telephone networks and even our interstate highways were not built to meet consumer demand; they were built to create it! These major infrastructure accomplishments were driven either by government mandate or by the foresight (okay, greed) of business monopolies. In the U.S. and much of the world, these forces are diminishing or no longer present.
