Elevation perception is crucial for binaural reproduction. In this paper, we propose an elevation control approach for binaural reproduction by parametrically modeling and modifying the spectral features of the direct component in BRIRs that play dominant roles in elevation perception. The elevation control rules are first learned from the spectral features parameterized by a set of digital filters of head related transfer functions (HRTFs) with different elevations. According to these rules, the spectral features can be modified and further used for resynthesizing the direct component of different BRIRs, with which the elevated entire BRIRs can be generated by combining the late components of original BRIRs. Listening test results show that this proposed method is able to control the perceived elevation of sound image. (C) 2018 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.
