Sourcing in the apparel industry has never been more complex, and companies are working hard to balance the sourcing, product development, and supply chain agilities to allow them to take advantage of extraordinary opportunities while also sidestepping very real risks. At the heart of the apparel business, consumer-centric retailing demands ever-faster responsiveness from ever more global supply chains. Meanwhile, lead time, cost management, product quality, and access to raw materials force sourcing organizations into tough decisions sometimes at odds with the goals of consumer-centricity. In this environment, sourcing maturity and alignment with product lifecycle management activities play an increasingly important role in balancing the tradeoffs that must be made.
