I never had a mentor. Growing up, the concept of mentorship wasn't even on my radar. When I was a college freshman, I remember a friend of mine telling me she was being taken out to lunch by her new mentor, a woman experienced in the field my friend was pursuing. The mentor offered guidance and was available if my friend had questions about her studies or college life in general. Looking back, I must admit that I felt both jealous and dubious about the whole thing. The free lunch sounded nice, but what could a mentor really offer that you couldn't make happen for yourself with a little drive and resourcefulness?
