Not all legacy systems deserve retirement. Some older systems can interface efficiently and effectively with new enterprise resources planning (ERP) systems. Before implementing a costly new ERP system, ensure the company understands its business processes and analyzes whether they are worth keeping or upgrading. Te decision to retain or discard existing systems is complex and includes a range of issues, such as cost impact, data integrity, and ease of interface with the new ERP software. The one legacy that must be retired is legacy thinking on the part of employees. By not facing the challenges of a changing business environment, any new system is doomed to failure.
