As more companies move toward ERP and MRP, there is a wealth of information to be harvested from those time-honored documents, bills of material (BOM). The data mined from BOM can be used as the foundation for an engineering information database, or EID. Successful ERP implementation is eased considerably by the existence of a solid EID. By carefully considering the needs of all users, a properly constructed product architecture defines the structure and use for the EID, resulting in a single standardized and accurate database. An eight-point checklist for constructing the EID can make the process of preparing for ERP implementation easier from the start.
