The Changing Role of the Master Scheduler

Although the output of the scheduling process remains intact, how the master scheduler develops that output has changed considerably. For decades, the master scheduler integrated the numerous requirements of the production line with little input from the non-production aspects of the supply chain. Today's master scheduler must possess a different set of skills than his or her predecessor-those of a communicator, a consensus builder, a problem solver, a teacher, a technologist, a negotiator, and a master of change. Little of the clerical nature of the job remains. To continue to add value, the master scheduler needs to adapt quickly to these changes and possess creative problem-solving skills.
