MOVING TOWARD A STANDARDIZED DATABASE

Databases are a vital part of the underlying architecture supporting the applications in the enterprise, but they are expensive to maintain and support. Key applications, including APS and ERP systems, must be chosen in part based on whether they run on the corporate standard database. If no good choice is available, the company must consider migrating to a new database standard. While few corporations can avoid some applications that run on non-standard databases, the proliferation of these adds to the expense and complexity of the computer architecture.
