Master Scheduling in the 21st Century is the third book in a trilogy focused on balancing demand and supply. While the trilogy is not as intriguing or mysterious as the Harry Potter series, it does contain essential information for the success of a manufacturing organization. The other two books in the trilogy are Safe Forecasting: A New Approach and Saks and Operations Planning: The How-To Handbook. This third book distills the master scheduling process into fourteen basic principles. These principles are presented as universal truths that can be applied to any organization regardless of size, complexity, volume, mix, customer, or order fulfillment method. Comparisons are made throughout the book with respect to the application of principles within a conventional (non-lean) versus a lean environment. The impact of master scheduling on cost, quality, and delivery is discussed as well as relationships to other well-known business tools such as total quality management (TQM), enterprise resources planning (ERP), and the theory of constraints (TOC).
