Most companies are dependent on technology to run their business. For a growing number of companies, technology literally is the business. The increasing technology content of products, services, and business processes has at times caused companies to confer almost mystical powers on their technology and technologists, often to the detriment of the business. Although technology can be complex, the role of technology is, as it always has been, to support business processes, and business processes still need to be supported by common sense. Middle- and senior-level business managers ― often non-technologists ― need to actively participate in decision making associated with the use of technology in their organizations. The skills required to meaningfully participate in technology-related decision making reside in most of us. All that is needed is a broad perspective on the role of technology within organizations, a solid grounding in general management principles, and a basic understanding of how to go about implementing technology-related change.
