These days, the issues of configuration management, lot control, and traceability are getting more and more attention. This is happening for two reasons: First, having proper controls ensures product quality and performance. Secondly, the issues of legal liability and government regulation force us to deal with them. These topics are both inter-related and costly. Configuration management—knowing what design levels of parts are going into your assemblies—is critical in today's world. And the only way to ensure that you have configuration control is to employ effective lot control and traceability methods that clearly show what went into what.
