On the Importance of Asking the Right Questions, or What is the Power of PowerPoint, Exactly?

I am grateful to the editors of Antipode for allowing me to sit a little while longer at their roundtable discussion of geography and visuality (Antipode 2003; 35(2)). And the first thing I want to say is that I am also very grateful to those seated with me at the table for their comments on my initial essay (Crang 2003; Driver 2003; Matless 2003; Ryan 2003), which suggested that geographers should consider our current, pervasive use of visual images in teaching and research more critically. The academic discipline of geography clearly has a longer and more complex history of the use of visual materials and technologies than I acknowledged; and experiences of teaching with visual images are also more diverse than I recognised.
