Yet, out of southern Africa anthropologist David McDermott Hughes offers something new. In this important book, Hughes foreshadows his argument with the provocative (and problematic) title From Enslavement to Environmentalism. For Hughes, contemporary conservation and development projects not only undermine rural African peasant livelihoods, but do so in even more fundamental ways than earlier colonial exploitation.
