Sociologist Steve Garner's Whiteness: An Introduction brings together the sophisticated and integrated reflections of a scholar with longstanding commitments to the field of whiteness studies and to anti-racism. Garner envisions whiteness as a problematic, or an analytical perspective-that is, a way of formulating questions about social relations-and his approach combines a broad theoretical sweep with focused case studies from a wide variety of contexts. The text rests upon two assumptions: first, that the meanings attached to "race" are always time and place specific, although there are certain overlapping truths; and second, that the analysis of whiteness must contribute to anti-racist scholarship by emphasizing the social relationships referred to as racism rather than slipping into an identity-based paradigm.
