A PERSPECTIVE OF THE ADVANCEMENT OF ROBOTIC SYSTEMS DURING THE PAST 15 YEARS

In 1983 a panel, which included the author, was assembled by the Untied States National Research Council. The goal of the panel was to assess the state-of-the-art in robotics technology, predict its capabilities in five years (1988), and speculate on the state of robot technology in ten yeaxs (1993). This paper briefly reviews the council's findings. Ii also attempts to compare the robotics technology used in industry today to the technology available in today's research laboratories, and to the predictions made by the panel 15 years ago. The objective of this paper is to stimulate discusion of how the robotics research community can enhance its contributions to the future developmeni of robotics. .
