We present dielectric coagulometry as a new techniquento estimate the risk of venous thrombosis by measuringnthe permittivity change associated with the blood coagulationnprocess. The method was first tested for a simplensystem of animal erythrocytes suspended in fibrinogennsolution, where the coagulation rate was controlled bynchanging the amount of thrombin added to the suspension.nSecond, the method was applied to a more realisticnsystem of human whole blood, and the inherent coagulationnprocess was monitored without artificial accelerationnby a coagulation initiator. The time dependence of thenpermittivity at a frequency around 1 MHz showed andistinct peak at a time that corresponds to the clottingntime. Our theoretical modeling revealed that the evolutionnof heterogeneity and the sedimentation in the systemncause the peak of the permittivity.
