Richard Dix was one of Hollywood's leading men who successfully made the transition from silent to talking pictures. So when RKO cast him as a Union spy in Secret Service, the studio expected a winning performance-and a profitable film. But a weak script and stilted supporting performances turned the movie into a romantic potboiler.
