Drinking Water Contaminant Candidate List Released

Amendments to the 1996 Safe Drinking Water Act (SDWA) changed the way unregulated contaminants are selected for regulation. The US Environmental Protection Agency (USEPA) now publishes a list of drinking water contaminants not subject to any proposed or promulgated National Primary Drinking Water Regulation. This list is known as the Drinking Water Contaminant Candidate List (DWCCL). (The DWCCL replaces the Drinking Water Priority List.) The DWCCL may include any chemical or microbial contaminant known or anticipated to occur in public water systems. The first DWCCL was finalized Feb. 6, 1998, and must be updated every five years. These contaminants may be regulated in the future under the SDWA.
