Control of dis-infection by-products (DBPs) boils down to one goal—protection of public health—whether the focus is regulatory standards, research findings, or treatment plant operations. It's common knowledge that the addition of chlorine in any of its forms creates problems when the chlorine reacts with natural organic matter (NOM) to form DBPs. The DBP family includes trihalometh-anes (THMs) as well as their lesser-known cousins—haloacetic acids (HAAs), haloketones (HKs), and haloacetonitriles (HANs).
