Experiments were conducted in natural and deionized distilled water to establish the extent to which chlorine diminishes the ability of activated carbon to adsorb 2-methylisoborneol (MIB). The authors determined that the degree of reduction in MIB adsorption capacity was controlled by the amount of chlorine reacted per unit mass of activated carbon. Although the capacity deduction was attributed to the oxidation of MIB adsorption sites, the authors found that chlorine could readily oxidize sites already containing MIB, thereby releasing it back into the aqueous phase. A significant portion of this lost capacity could be recovered by drying the oxidized carbon. To maximize the efficiency of both the chlorine and powdered activated carbon (PAC), contact between the chlorine and PAC should be eliminated or minimized.
