AWWA's Finance, Accounting and Management Controls Committee Tackles Broad Financial Issues

For the water industry, the increasingly complex body of compliance issues has brought with it an added financial burden. This awwa committee works to help utilities meet these growing fiscal challenges. The increasingly rigorous goals of enhanced public health and protection of the environment have historically manifested themselves as more stringent environmental standards that must be met by the water industry. Recognizing that environmental compliance requires substantial capital and operating costs, AWWA acknowledges the critical importance of financial issues as a subject for public scrutiny and concern. Subsequent to the implementation of the landmark environmental laws enacted in the 1970s, it became apparent to water industry professionals that exclusive reliance upon water rates would not, by itself, satisfy the various policy considerations that affect the financial and economic health of water utilities.
