Tank Asset Preservation Can Help Ensure Water Storage Tanks Reach The Century Mark

Water storage tank maintenance programs may take various approaches, but a comprehensive program to ensure the tank's long-term service entails much more than simple maintenance. Given the price of new water storage tanks, knowledgeable water tank owners and operators are looking to preserve these critical infrastructure assets for the long term. Furthermore, water tank preservation has been proven to pay off; the Steel Tank Institute/Steel Plate Fabricators Association's Century Club includes dozens of preserved steel tanks that have been in service for well over 100 years. Forward-thinking tank engineers design structures that better resist corrosion and are easy to preserve, but only a tank manufacturer fully understands the structure's design and ongoing needs that ensure optimal life. Owners and engineers should work closely with tank manufacturers to consider elimination of stitch welds, unsealed overlapping plates, and other crevices and tight areas that are difficult to paint.
